The device has a housing and a handle, e.g. a drive lever (2) or hand lever, pivotable about an axis, whose pivoting is converted into a linear or pivotal motion of an actuating element such as an actuating lever (8) with variable transmission ratio over the pivoting range. The actuating lever is pivotable about the pivot axis and is preferably coupled to the handle via a lever arm (7) or similar in shape-locking manner. The effective length of at least one of the levers is variable over the handle's pivot angle range.
