A target velocity ratio of the continuously-variable transmission is calculated (S220, S230), which lies between a maximum and a minimum value from a number of given velocity ratios. These correspond with a number of engine operational modes. The continuously-variable transmission is controlled (S260) in accordance with the target velocity ratio.
