The method involves forming groups of users in a communications network, especially an ad hoc network for mobile users, whereby the users have different patterns of movement. The users that are moving in similar directions at similar speeds form a group. Time variations in receiver field strengths can be compared between users and users with similar time variations formed into groups. Independent claims are also included for the following: a subscriber equipment in a communications network.
