The press shoe (10), within a belt mantle roller and the like to be forced in the press direction (P) against a counter roller (11), has two gaps (23,24) in the shoe cross section on a plane at right angles to the press direction. They extend along the length of the shoe, from the press direction to the outer ends, to reduce the twist stiffness around the longitudinal axis of the shoe, with little effect on the bending stiffness in the press direction. The press shoe, in a belt mantle press roller, has gaps at the same height level, on the neutral plane through the surface center of the cross section surface of the shoe, on a plane at right angles to the force loading direction. A push force is at one side, and a pull force is on the other side when the shoe is bent into a curve. The gaps are also on the same height level as the twist center of the cross section surface. A support (27) is at the outer open ends of the gaps, to restrict the elasticity of the shoe in the press direction. The gaps have a height of 5-20 mm, and the total length of the gaps is 50-70% of the length of the shoe cross section, in the machine running direction. The twist resistance of the shoe cross section surface is at maximum double the moment of inertia calculated on the axis at right angles to the press direction and through the center of the surface of the cross section.
