Production of blocks or bars made from steels based on nickel and cobalt alloys comprises melting consumable electrodes (28) in an electrically conducting slag bath using an alternating or direct current in a short downwardly opening water-cooled mold (10) through which a current contact can be made with the bath. The melt current is introduced into the slag bath (24) through the electrode and through the mold in a controlled manner in terms of regulating the distribution of the current between the electrode and the mold and is conducted back through the mold and the block and a base plate (14).
