The mounting assembly for the steps (4) of an escalator, with step surfaces (24), has holder units (34) at the sides to work with the continuous chain drive in a release fitting. The release fitting is a snap fastener with a holding spring (40). The holder unit has a holding pocket (36), for a grip unit (28) which is held in place by the spring.
