In a bobbin cross-winding process, the bobbin turns at a pre-determined peripheral speed (VU) and the thread is guided back and forth. The speed of bobbin peripheral rotation is varied in accordance with changes in the thread back and forth speed (VG). The bobbin thread peripheral speed is altered as required to maintain essentially constant speed (VF) of the incoming thread and a constant feed angle alpha of the thread to the existing winding. The bobbin peripheral speed (VU) is derived from an assessment factor B, where B = (1 + (VG/VU)(/ (1 + (VGneu/VU)( , and VGneu is the new transverse speed.
