Duration of time intervals runs from a start value at a definite start time point (t0) up to final values at variable time points (ti). A vehicle reference speed signal (Vref) is observed and evaluated to identify the start time point, which is set if there is a positive gradient for the vehicle reference speed signal. On setting the start time point, the existing vehicle reference speed signal is stored as a definite start speed (V0) and a counter begins increments.
