The device has at least one gear stage and a drive gear wheel (8,9) for bringing into/out of engagement with a rotatable axle. This is achieved via a coupling (6,7) with an actuation arrangement (5) connected to an electrically operated actuating element with axially arranged magnet coils. The coils are operated sequentially, are mutually electrically isolated and interact with a core of magnetic material joined to the actuation arrangement for displacement.
