The method involves producing first and second sets of one or more shade stage specimens with the first and second marking devices (520), comparing the sets, determining one or more desired calibration points, producing a correspondingly adapted shade transition function associated with the first marking device and using it to a first output from the first marking device. Independent claims are also included for the following: a marking system, a marking device, a raster image processor and a system for adapting the output of a first printer to a second output of a second printer.
