The printing action uses a printing plate (2), with a surface structured by the use of energy to give zones which take ink and zones which reject ink. When ink is applied to the printing plate surface, it is transferred partially to the paper to give the printed image. Before inking, the print accepting surfaces are wetted by rollers (4,5) and energy is applied by electromagnetic rays (8) to remove the water from the printing surfaces to take up the ink. After ink has been transferred to the paper, as printing, residual ink is cleaned from the printing plate for the process to be repeated.
