The process variables in an operating space are identified and the actual value of operating parameters such as web tension and speed are measured. The measured operating parameter values that influence the printer operation, are assessed. A map of the operating space is generated by measuring the risk of the printer operating state, using the assessed parameter values. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) Printer operation monitoring apparatus; and (2) Printing machine configuration.
