Production of gas containing hydrogen, useful in refinery processes, and removal of hydrogen sulfide involves thermal dissociation of hydrogen sulfide, (partly) with external heat source, and rapid chilling by mixing with fluid
In the production of gas (I) containing hydrogen (H2) from a charge (II) containing hydrogen sulfide by (1) producing a gas stream (III) containing H2 and sulfur (S) from (II), (2) separating (III) from S and recovering (I), stage 1 comprises (1a) dissociation by heating (II) (partly) with an external heat source; and (1b) chilling the hot gas by mixing with a fluid in less than 20 milliseconds. Production of gas (I) containing hydrogen (H2) from a charge (II) containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) involves (1) producing a gas stream (III) containing H2 and sulfur (S) from (II) and (2) separating (III) from S and recovering (I). The novel features are that stage 1 comprises (1a) heating (II) in heating zone(s) to a temperature T1 to produce hot (III) and S by dissociation of H2S, at least partly with an external heat source; and (1b) chilling the hot gas by mixing with a fluid with a suitable temperature T2 in mixer(s), preferably a sucking jet pump, to give (III) at a suitable temperature T3 under conditions such that the mixing time is less than 20 milliseconds (ms). An Independent claim is also included for a unit for producing (I), which has furnace(s) of ceramic material, a (II) supply, an outlet for (III) containing H2, S and H2S and means of separating the constituents of (III) and collecting (I), in which the furnace is (partly) connected with an external heat source, mixer(s) for mixing (III) with a cooling fluid is connected to the outlet of the furnace so that the mixture is cooled to T3 within 20 ms and the mixer is connected to the separator.
