A personal (3) rescue system for tall buildings consists of a harness (2) with a drum (1) reservoir containing a length of thin but strong wire (4) which is hooked (5) to an attachment point on the building. The rate at which cable is dispensed from the drum is regulated by a hand-operated brake unit (6). The drum may be worn on the chest or the back. When worn on the back, the cable is dispensed through a feed tube between the legs and upwards past the chest and face.
