A strip-like multifilament superconductor has twisted conductor cores consisting of superconductive filaments with a high Tc metal oxide phase and embedded in a normally conducting matrix material which has a predetermined electrical conductivity at the operating temperature of the multifilament superconductor. The novelty comprises the presence of a central core region (13) of a core material (12') having an electrical conductivity which is at least an order of magnitude less than that of the matrix material (15). Also claimed is a process for producing the above multifilament superconductor by (a) forming an extrusion billet having a core material-filled central bore surrounded by matrix material having bores filled with a superconductor precursor material; and (b) subjecting the billet to several deformation and heat treatment operations, including one or more rolling passes to produce the strip shape of the final product (7').
