The present invention relates to a common rail system that comprises a pre-supply pump after which an adjustable-flow high-pressure pump is mounted for producing the fuel pressure in the fuel accumulator through the discharge flow. The speed of the high-pressure pump is proportional to the speed of the engine. When the internal combustion engine is disengaged, the inlet to the suction chamber of the high-pressure pump is adjusted so that said suction chamber is largely filled with fuel after the high-pressure pump is turned off. During the subsequent starting process of the internal combustion engine, a maximal pump flow-rate is thus provided for the build-up of the fuel pressure since the suction chamber of the pump is full.
