Crack resistant valve plate for controlling molten metal flow in a slide gate valve comprising a refractory valve plate with an axis and an orifice(19) for conducting molten metal positioned on this axis. Truncated corners(54a,b.c,d) focus a clamping force towards the axis near the orifice preventing crack formation. Each truncated corner is orthogonal to a line(78a,b,c,d) extending between a tangent point to the orifice, across the axis and through an intersection of lines(72b,d) drawn parallel to converging plate edges a distance equal to the radius of the orifice, such that the angular orientation of each corner with respect to the axis changes with the position of the orifice along the axis.
