To reduce or prevent adhesions to or between organs, parts of organs or tissues, at a particular location in a mammal, the invention proposes to subject the mammal to a treatment which provides for reduced internalization and degradation of plasminogen activators in mesothelial cells present at the location. In particular, the mammal is treated locally with an active agent capable of interfering with internalization of plasminogen activators by their receptors on mesothelial cells, or interfering with recycling of these receptors, or blocking these receptors to prevent binding of plasminogen activators, or interfering with degradation of plasminogen activators in mesothelial cells. Examples of such active agents are chloroquine and 39 kd receptor-associated protein. Alternatively, expression of said receptors by the mesothelial cells is downregulated, or the mammal is treated with a plasminogen activator mutant which resists receptor-mediated endocytosis.
