A damping system for a table tennis bat has the handle bored out from the rear of the handle to near to the top of the handle. A rigid tube with a diameter smaller than the bore is anchored into the head of the handle with one end and has its outer end held by damping (9) between the tube and the handle. Two half shells (3) forming the handle sandwich the handle extension of the bat and are separated from the tapering tops (5) of the handle by a damping insert layer (10) of leather or cork. The tube is made of rigid material such as aluminium, titanium or carbon fibre.
