The lace clamp (111) for a sports shoe (CH) has an eye (10) formed in the upper to receive a lace. The eye has a slot section to receive and retain the lace (100). The eye can be positioned on a stiffening tongue (3) for the upper. The slot in the eye extends parallel to the direction of the tongue. The tongue can have a line of stitching extending across it to reinforce the eye fitting.
