The apparatus consists of a seal holder in the form of a shaped bar (2) with one face (3) shaped to receive the seal (1) and the other connected to the heads (4) of a series of actuators (5) such as power cylinders. The bar is deformable in at least one plane and is connected to each actuator head by a pivoted coupling, e.g. a fork and a pivot bolt (8).
