A sintered ore containing manganese for converting in an electric furnace contains 5 to 18% of CaO, 10% or less of Al2O3, 4% or less of MgO and 4 to 12% of SiO2 by weight and the molten composition of the sintered ore satisfies the following relationship:- (CaO + 1.39MgO)/(SiO2 + Al2O3) = 0.8 - 2.7 An Independent claim is included for a method for the production of a manganese based sintered ore conforming to this composition for subsequent electric furnace converting. An apparatus for testing the high temperature properties of a raw material destined to be converted in an electric furnace using measurements of electrical resistance, thickness and temperature of a sample of the raw material is also described.
