The telephone enquiry system has a receiver centre (2). A fixed or mobile telephone (1) is able to receive digital words (3,4) via a telephone network. Calls passed to the receiver centre ring for a set number of times and the call centre recognizes the number of rings and the enquiring phone number automatically. An audible or visible response corresponding to the number of rings is transmitted back to the enquiring telephone.
