Device for sorting cans and throwaway cups associated with a reprocessing container, allowing, if required, a user to receive a deposit in return. The device comprises an orifice for insertion of containers and paths to their collection areas. A selection chamber is situated downstream of the insertion orifice and guides them by gravity towards a sorting shutter, which is displaced from its initial position so that it opens one or other of the cup or can passages. Displacement of the sorting shutter to one side or other so that it opens the appropriate passage is by movement of a piling shutter controlled by a recognition device that determines what sort of container it is.
