The airbag unit comprises a support for an airbag (16), a cover (20) for the airbag deployment opening (4) and a cover support which can move between opening sealing and release positions. The deployment direction of the airbag support from the rest position is displaced relative to the opening. The two supports are coupled so that displacement of the airbag support from its rest to deployment positions causes displacement of the cover support from it sealing to release positions.
