Device comprises a carrier block with an autostatic reference block that can be fixed on the head of a patient. The carrier block has a plate (75) on which is mounted an emitter block or a secondary reference sensor (74) and one or more mounting plates (72) integral with the plate. The mounting plates have wedges on their inner surface that allow the device to be mounted on the patient head without slipping or exerting excessive pressure on the patient head. An Independent claim is made for a surgical navigation method using a positioning device and an associated computer.
