The dam has a valve (1) with a gate (2). The gate can move between a closed position (P1) and successive degrees of opening (P) which provide a passage for the water with increasing cross-sectional area. The gate is mounted so that its opening is stable at a set water level (N) which is greater than the level (N1) at which the gate started to open.
