The method to analyze and measure substances carried by shaft fluids, during drilling takes a sample for the constituents to be vaporized. The nature and/or quantity of the constituents are registered in a gas phase by chromatography. The vapors are carried to a mass spectrometer to determine the ratio of 13C:12C carbon isotopes contained within the constituents. An Independent claim is included for an apparatus to analyze and measure the constituents carried in a drilling fluid with a combined chromatography for the gas phase, and mass spectrometry to determine the ratio of 13C:12C of carbon isotopes carried in the fluid constituents.
