Production of an organotin maleate composition useful as a stabilizer for thermoplastic resins, especially polyvinyl chloride

Production of an organotin maleate composition comprises reacting an alcohol, epoxyalkane, polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol with maleic acid and anhydride and reacting the product with a dialkyltin oxide and alkyltin chloride. An organotin maleate composition is produced by: (a) reacting a mixture comprising at least one compound RA with maleic acid and anhydride, where RA is an aliphatic alcohol with 1-16 carbon (C) atoms, an alcohol mixture with a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 32-242, an epoxyalkane with 1-16C atoms, an epoxyalkane mixture with a Mw of 30-240 or a polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol compound with 2-16C atoms; and (b) reacting the product with a dialkyltin oxide of formula (I) and an alkyltin chloride of formula (II). (R1)2Sn=O (I) (R1)xSnCl4-x (II) R1 = 1-12C aliphatic hydrocarbyl; x = 1 or 2.
