Preparation of halogenated metallic phthalocyanines (I) used on fixed bed for sweetening of corrosive petroleum distillates comprises mixing metal phthalocyanine with halogenating agent in stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 to 1:20, optionally in inert solvent; refluxing or heating with stirring for 1 - 6 hours; distilling excess halogenating agent; and filtration, washing residue to obtain catalyst. Preparation of halogenated metallic phthalocyanines of formula (I) used on fixed bed for sweetening of corrosive petroleum distillates comprises: (a) mixing metal phthalocyanine with halogenating agent in stoichiometric ratio of 1 : 1 to 1 : 20, optionally in inert solvent; (b) refluxing or heating with stirring, for 1 - 6 hours; (c) distilling excess halogenating agent; and (d) filtration and washing of residue to obtain desired catalyst. M = Co, Ni, Fe or Mn; X = Cl, Br or I.
