2H-Pyran-3(6H)-one derivatives (I) and their use in the preparation of optically active sugars. 2H-Pyran-3(6H)-one derivatives (I). R = 1-8C alkyl or together the two groups R form a carbocyclic ring of up to 8C; and Ac = acyl of up to 18C. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) starting material (II) for the preparation of (I); (2) the use of (I) to prepare an optically active sugar of formula (VIII); (3) intermediates (III), (IV), (V), and (VI) used in the preparation of (VIII). R1, R2 = a ketal residue having up to 8 C atoms.
