The piston (10) reciprocates within a cylinder (44) and is linked to a connecting rod (48) by a pivot (50). The side wall (22) of the piston head (12) contains a series of peripheral grooves to carry the piston rings. Within the head is an internal cooling channel (14), with an inlet and an outlet for the circulation of cooling fluid. A ring carrier (36) is fitted into the upper part of the head, such that the internal face (38) of the carrier forms the outer wall of the cooling channel. The ring carrier is produced with the upper grooves (24, 26) to carry the upper two rings.
