The garden spade or fork has a transverse bar (41) which normally fits against the top of the blade or tines, allowing the foot to rest on it to drive the tool into the ground. The bar is mounted on a pivot (24) and can swing out so that it can rest on the ground and act as a fulcrum for levering up earth. The bar is controlled by a push bar (5) connected to a cable(6) by a spiral spring (64).
