The vehicle battery (12) is cooled by part of the air conditioning system of the vehicle. The air conditioning system (14) has a refrigerant circuit (16) with a flow regulator (18), a main evaporator (20), a compressor (22) and a condenser (24). The refrigerant flow is branched (38) to tubes round the battery, to act as a supplementary evaporator which is in parallel with the main evaporator.
