A latex used, shows a solid content of 20-60 (preferably 35-50) wt% and contains polymer(s) (I) dispersed in the form of particles with a diameter of 50-200 nm and is stabilized with a surfactant. The latex is characterized in that it contains 10-50 wt% alkali-soluble polymer (based on content of (I)). An Independent claim is also included for porous substrates treated with a reinforcing latex as above.
