The invention relates to a programmable acousto-optical device in which an unknown input polarisation wave interacts successively with several different sound beams which are generated by piezoelectric transducers (T1 to T6) in one or more birefringent elasto-optical media. Said device comprises circuits for generating programmable discrete amplitude frequencies that are applied to the transducers (T1 to T6) and provides an output optical wave having a frequency spectrum amplitude modulation that is a function of both the input optical wave modulation and the sound wave modulation. The invention is particularly suitable for wavelength-multiplexed optical communication systems
