A first passage (24) communicates between discharge side of a cylinder bore (1) and crank chamber (4) of a housing (5). A second passage (32) connects between crank chamber and suction side of cylinder bore through an orifice (26) to allow pressure release. The cross-sectional area of orifice is variably controlled so that it can be increased during compressor operation and capacity control operation. The compressor (100) includes a valve plate (6) tiltably connected at a predetermined angle to a drive shaft (10) rotatably supported in a cylinder block (3). The slant plate is coupled by bearings to pistons slidably arranged within the cylinder bores of the cylinder block. The pistons reciprocate within the cylinder bores upon rotation of the slant plate. A suction reed valve (21) is arranged in a first passage that communicates between the discharge side of the cylinder bore and the crank chamber of a housing. The suction reed valve is controlled by a suction pressured produced within the cylinder bore.
