A separator is cylindrical with a longitudinal cooling tube (5) passing through the length of the internal volume and carrying the coolant in gaseous form to one or more compressors from one or more exchangers acting as evaporators. The internal volume of the cylindrical body has an inlet (14) and an outlet (16) for another circuit. The internal longitudinal tube is central and the inlet and outlet are placed on the same side of the same outside end face. The separator is operated in an upright position. Alternatively, the longitudinal tube is eccentric and the inlet and outlet are placed on opposite end faces. In this case, the separator is operated in a lying down position with the longitudinal tube near the bottom, as low as possible. The inlet and outlet are also as near the bottom as possible. The section of the longitudinal tube is greater than that of the gas suction collector in the cooling circuit. The separator body is thermally insulated.
