The bicycle pedal, rotating on a spindle (3) and having a top plate with a front stop (9) for a cycling shoe sole plate cleat and a spring-loaded rear retaining element (10), has the front stop and front surface (26) of the cleat (C) able to slide relative to one another in a direction perpendicular to the pedal plate, especially upwards, without the cleat disengaging. The rear retaining element (10) is designed to engage with a matching part of the cleat, and the pedal has a thrust zone (15) for the cycling shoe sole behind the retaining element.
