A computer simulator apparatus comprising a head slaved area of interest(HSAOI) using frame store demultiplexing. Frame store demultiplexing can best be described by the following example: A computer can take 10 pipes of data, each of which can generate 2 x 1280x 1024 images at 60Hz. A head tracker feeds steering information to a real-time application running on the computer, which contains a SEOS software application which knows where the display channels are relative to the eye. This application then controls the video switch, which can switch any input channel to any output channel in real-time. The simulator requires 60 output channels which can be provided from the 10 pipes of image data as follows: six output channels running at 60Hz covering the area straight ahead of the user's gaze(requiring six input channels), surrounding the users gaze we need 14 output channels which we can be allowed to work at 30Hz by instructing the software application to interleave 2 channel's display so that each channel is displayed every other frame. In this way, a single video output, running at 60Hz, is being split out into two 30Hz images. The resolution is maintained at 1280 x 1024, simply the frame rate is dropped. This gives 14 output channels from seven input channels. The remainder of the output channels can be a 15Hz set of channels (4 output channels for 1 input channel) so each frame of a channel would be displayed every fourth frame(requires 10 input channels). In this way the 20 channel computer running the simulator has 20 images, which are then sent to the video switcher, which provides the 60 channels required on the input to the 60 projectors of the simulator.
