A method of prediction of the directional tendency of a drilling system, which uses continuous inclination, direction and toolface information supplied from a measurement-while-drilling (MWD) tool, a rotary steerable drilling system or other downhole equipment, such as at-bit inclination measurement to give a prediction of the tendency of the system. These measurements are used with a finite element mathematical model of the drilling process to continually calibrate in real-time the drilling parameters that are not obtainable from measurements, and to refine the subsequent tendency prediction in real-time. The continuous data is used in conjunction with the accepted survey measurements so that drilling targets can be more accurately hit. A method for calibrating trajectory tendency control parameters including a filtering step is also disclosed.
