The presence of a leak in a fluid system such as a domestic plumbing system is detected by attaching a vibration sensor 12 to a pipe 14. The sensed vibration data is then broken down into at least two separate frequency bands which are then compared with reference data to determine the flow rate of the fluid system and the presence of a leak in the system. A leak detection system incorporating a pipe mounted vibration sensor and a processing unit to compare sensed data with a reference value is also described.
