Governor for use in an engine having an overspeed protection device

The governor has a centrifugal weight mechanism coupled via a lever 18 to an angularly adjustable metering valve member 23 which controls the level of fuelling of the engine depending on engine speed. The governor also has a damping arrangement 24 to damp oscillatory movement of lever 18 and means for preventing the overspeed protection device from tripping upon engine start-up. An adjustment member 32 is provided to limit the extent of the pivotal movement of lever 18 and hence the extent of angular movement of the metering valve member 23 to that beyond the region of dead travel which is conventionally provided to enable the governor to be adapted for different engine types. This prevents any delay in fuelling control on start-up and therefore prevents the overspeed protection device from tripping inadvertently. The adjustment member 32 may co-operate directly with the lever 18. In a modification, fig.3, an adjustment member 42 acts on the damping spring 21 such that working chamber 30 communicates with outlet 38 in the dead travel region to avoid fuelling delay and prevent the overspeed protection device from tripping.
