PURPOSE: To obtain the rolls for hot or cold rolling stages excellent in heat resistance and fouling resistance by forming a fouling-resistant metallic layer, ceramic layer or cermet layer welded by electric discharge on the surface of a base material. ;CONSTITUTION: An electric discharge coat treating method ESD in which an electrode to be a welding material is brought into contact with the surface of the base metal for rolls is applied as a means for forming the heat-resistant, fouling-resistant and wear-resistant surface film on the surface of base material for rolls. Metal or cermet is welded on the surface of base material for rolls with small heat input by this ESD method and, according to this method, deformation of the base material for rolls is hardly generated, the adhesion strength of the coat is raised due to the formation of a thin fusion-diffusion layer in the boundary part of weld. Further, by properly selecting the material for sealing treatment of metal or cermit of the surface layer, the prolongment of life is attained.
