PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a large-scale cross-bar switch with a small amount of hardware. ;SOLUTION: A crossbar switch 1 is constituted by combining 16 sub-crossbar units 105 with each other. Each sub-crossbar unit 105 has 32 input-output ports in each of four directions. In the crossbar switch 1, a forward network which receives an input from one of the input ports 101 and outputs the input through one of the output ports 103, after passing the input through one or more sub- crossbar units 105 rightward from the left side and downward from the top side and a backward network, which receives an input through one of the input ports 102 and outputs the input through one of the output ports 104, after passing the input through one or more sub-crossbar units 105 leftward from the right side and upward from the bottom side are formed. Each sub-crossbar switch unit 105, in addition, has a capability of switching the forward and backward networks to each other.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
