PURPOSE:To provide a novel diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid derivative or its salt which shows excellent characteristics as a chelating agent for medical diagnosis particularly for diagnosis of liver tumor. CONSTITUTION:Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid derivative of formula I (A is alkylene; B is aliphatic hydrocarbon, phenyl substituted with aliphatic hydrocarbon) or its salt, for example, N-[5-amino-5-(4-octylphenylcarbamoyl)- pentylcarbamoylethyl]-diethylenetriamine-N,N',N'',N''-tetraacetic acid. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reaction of a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III (X is amino group-protecting group such as benzyloxycarbonyl) followed by deprotection of group X. The complex compound formed between a compound of formula I and a metal atom manifests excellent contrast-enhancing ability, tissue selectivity, stability, and retainability in blood without exhibiting high osmotic pressure. The complex between a compound of formula I and a ferromagnetic metal and its salt are useful for diagnostis of liver tumor.
