PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely retrieve image materials stored in a large-capacity archive from a remote place.;SOLUTION: The attribute information of image material in the archive 2 is described in an MPEG-7 file and structured as a database. In this file, further representative still-picture of the material and voice are described. The material is retrieved from the DB according to a genre dictionary by a remote retrieval/edit terminal 1, and the retrieval result is transmitted from the archive 2 to the terminal 1 by the MPEG-7 file. At the terminal 1, necessary material is selected according to the transmitted file, and edited. The edit result is transmitted as EDL data to an edit device 3. In the edit device 3, according to the transmitted EDL data, the material is obtained from the archive 2 to automatically perform the actual edit work. The material in the archive 2 can be easily retrieved from the terminal 1 at the remote place of the archive 2 and the edit device 3, and actual edit work can be automatically performed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
