Omnidirectional wide range hand-held bar code reader

PURPOSE: To provide a portable bar code reader having a two-dimensional image sensor for omnidirectionally reading out a bar code. ;CONSTITUTION: The reader includes a variable image forming optical system 10 and a variable flash illumination optical system 20. A spotter beam 26 is provided to direct the reader to a bar code symbol. The beam 26 is used also for measuring a distance from the reader up to a bar code and determining the focal distances of both the optical systems 10, 20. The optical system 10 is automatically adjusted in order to present the correct magnification and focus of a bar code independently of a distance up to a label. The optical system 20 is used for concentrating illumination energy only into the visual field of the bar code reader. Flash illumination energy measures peripheral light and the energy is held by setting up its level in accordance with the measured level.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
