A neat composition for soluble cutting fluid comprises: (A) 15-50% by mass of blocked polyoxyalkylene compound of the formula HO-(R1-O)a-(R2-O)b-(R3-O)c-H (I), where R1 and R3 each are a propylene group, R2 is an ethylene group, a and c each are an integer of 1-40, b is an integer of 3-40, the sum of a, b, and c is 15 a+b+c 100, and the ratio of (a+c)/b is 1.0 (a+c)/b 4.0; (B) 1.0-15% by mass of a C8-C10 fatty acid; (C) at least one of basic compounds selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal hydroxide, an aliphatic amine, an alicyclic amine, an aromatic amine, an alkanol amine and a nitrogen-containing compound of the formula II, where R4 is a C1-C24 hydrocarbon group, R5 is an ethylene or propylene group, d is an integer of 1-30, x is hydrogen, a C1-C24 hydrocarbon group or a group of the formula -(R6-O)e, where R6 is an ethylene or propylene group and e is an integer of 1-30. And added in an amount exceeding a neutralization equivalent of said fatty acid (B), the sum of (B) and (C) being in the range of between 1.1 and 85% by mass; and (D) water added in an amount of from 0 to 60% by mass based on total composition. The inventive cutting fluid retains satisfactory qualities including high resistance to mechanical wear of the parts of a feed pump, suppression of objectionable foams and separability from a lubricating oil in the cutting machine.
