Hybrid lighting system including white LED and fluorescent LED to generate white light

Hybrid lighting system (50) for producing white light, including: a first light emitting diode (LED), wherein the first LED (54) emits red light; a phosphor-LED (58) disposed adjacent to the first LED; a second LED (56) which emits green light; and a third LED (52) which emits red light, wherein the phosphor-LED includes a blue LED that emits blue light and at least one phosphor that converts at least a portion of the blue light to one of a green light and a red light, and wherein the spectral wavelength of the red light emitted from the first LED (54) is different from the spectral wavelength of the red light emitted from the third LED (52). The hybrid lighting system of the invention exhibits improved performance over conventional lighting systems that use either non-phosphor LEDs or phosphor-LEDs to produce white light. [Fig. 5]
